MMP2A gene on chromosome 16q13-q21 that encodes matrix metalloproteinase 2, a ubiquitinous metalloproteinase that degrades type-IV collagen and is involved in remodelling vasculature, endometrial menstrual breakdown, angiogenesis, tissue repair, tumour invasion, inflammation, and atherosclerotic plaque rupture.
MMP2 mutations cause Torg-Winchester syndrome and nodulosis-arthropathy-osteolysis syndrome.
