CA4

A gene on chromosome 17q23 that encodes a carbonic anhydrase, a zinc metalloenzyme that catalyses the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. Carbonic anhydrases participate various biological processes, including respiration, calcification, maintaining acid-base balance, bone resorption and producing aqueous humour, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva and gastric acid. Carbonic anhydrase IV is a glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol-anchored membrane isozyme expressed on the luminal surfaces of pulmonary (and other) capillaries and proximal renal tubules; it is thought to have a role in hereditary defects in bicarbonate transport.

Closer examination of the structure reveals that the "hydrated layer" is only a hydrated region or channel along the c-axis at the center of the unit cell at 1/2, 1/2, 0, since the apatitic layers are held together by strong bonds involving the Ca3, Ca4, and the [HPO.sub.4.sup.2-] (P5) groups along the a-axis.
The calculative scale (CALC) was constructed using ten items: Individual performance appraisals at the managerial level (item ca1), at the professional/technical (nonmanagerial)level (item ca2), at the clerical level (item ca3), and at the manual level of employment (item ca4); individual reward systems (merit pay/performance-related pay) at the managerial level (item ca5), at the professional/technical (nonmanagerial) level (item ca6), at the clerical level (item ca7), and at the manual level (item ca8); and formal evaluation of the effectiveness of personnel training immediately after the training has taken place (item ca9) and evaluation some months after training (item ca10).

The macrolide antibiotics can inhibit the cytochrome P450 microsomal enzyme CA4. Erythromycin and Troleandomycin have the highest affinity for this enzyme and have a similar drug interaction profile.
Population density in a pool designated CA6 (at Charleston, Oregon) declined by two orders of magnitude (from 3850 to 30 animals/liter, pool volume = 28 liters) between August and September 1970; at the opposite extreme, pool CA4 went from "no Tigriopus observed" to 780 copepods/liter (estimated volume of 3 liters) between September and October 1969 (Vittor 1971).
