Like all acute treatment--be it a simple analgesic, NSAID, caffeine-containing compound, butalbital, ergotamine, or opioid--too-frequent use of triptans can produce medication-overuse headache, also referred to as rebound headache.
Medications such as acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine combination (Fioricet) and aspirin, butalbital, and caffeine combination (Fiorinal) have lost favor due to the increased risk of rebound or medication overuse headache.
Many drugs can cause this spiral, including aspirin/acetamino/caffeine combinations, butalbital compounds (e.g., Floricet[R]), and narcotics such as propoxvphene (e.g., Darvon[R], Darvocet[R]), codeine (e.g., Hvdrocordone[R], Hycodan[R], Lorcet[R]), oxycodone (e.g., OxyContin[R]), and morphine (e.g., Roxanol[R]).
Other migraine drugs include acetaminophen (alone, or in combination with caffeine and butalbital, aspirin and caffeine, or isometheptene and dichloralphenazone): NSAIDs, including aspirin; chlorpromazine (Thorazine); dimenhydrinate (Dramamine); diphenhydramine (Benadryl); morphine; meperidine; intranasal butorphanol (Stadol); and corticosteroids.

Others may combine an acetaminophen with a relaxant (for example, Fioricet, which is a combination of acetaminophen, butalbital and caffeine).
