Herbal medicine
A perennial culinary herb that contains volatile oils and vitamins B and C, which has a long tradition among herbologists and an antidiabetic, antihypertensive and antiseptic. Onions inhibit platelet aggregation by blocking thromboxane synthesis, reduce glucose in diabetics and may contain a natural enzyme inhibitor that blocks the growth of cancer cells. Raw slices may be applied for insect bites or as a poultice for bruises or sprains. Onions and garlic reduce the incidence of atherogenic diet-induced cholesterol gallstones in experimental models.
