Electron microscopy examination exhibited that the Bruch membrane of the aging control mice was slightly thicker than that of the young mice, while the Bruch membrane of the AMD mice without treatment was considerably thickened concomitant with loss of homogeneity.
Early AMD is clinically characterized by the formation of drusens and enhanced thickness of Bruch membrane [19].
Our results showed that the deposit severity and Bruch membrane thickness were all decreased significantly evidenced by histopathological examination, suggesting that Fructus lycii ethanol extract could protect mice from AMD induced by high-fat diet plus oxidative stress.
