broken neck

Fracture, often with dislocation, of any of the bony vertebrae of the neck. The importance is not so much the bony injury as the probable injury to the spinal cord lying within the bony canal. Such injury is likely to be serious and may be fatal. Survivors often suffer permanent paralysis below the level of the injury. Neurological damage can be increased by moving a person with a broken neck.
