a species with black spores, often present in the external auditory meatus but rarely pathogenic; used in the commercial manufacturing of citric and gluconic acids.

Aspergillus niger

A pathogenic species with black spores, frequently present in the external auditory meatus. It may cause pneumonia in immunocompromised patients, and otomycosis. The presence of localized oxalate crystals within necrotic tissue from the external auditory canal suggests the diagnosis.
