Herbal medicineA perennial plant, the roots of which contain saponins (e.g., diosgenin) and volatile oils; it is antiseptic and astringent, and has been used for bites and dermal irritation, gastrointestinal complaints (e.g., haemorrhage and diarrhoea) and to stop postpartum haemorrhage.
