Summary: Washington [USA], April 26 (ANI): Scientists have outlined and quantified the mechanism of the ocean carbon cycle, ' biological pump
' which could be used to better predict future global climate change.
That process, known as the biological pump
, plays a critical role in regulating Earth's climate.
Modern advances in technology and increased understanding of key techniques have paved the way to deconvolve the role of micro-nutrients in modulating climate change via carbon dioxide removal by the biological pump
. One such advancement is the study of isotopes systems.
"One of the things we want to know is whether these shallow waters are still the biological pump
that is feeding the reef," Sallan says.
One novel design that emerged from this process, the double-acting bladder pump, was inspired by the heart, a multichambered biological pump
with common walls (Figure 1).
However, once in a while in our intensive care environment we challenge Nature's rules when we splice artificial support into the biological pump
. Two examples from my personal experience, one occurring long ago and one very recently, reminded me of that fact and may be instructive to recount.
"The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation enhances the biological pump
, and if it declined it should have had an impact on primary productivity as well as the overall climate for the region," explains Oregon State University's Andreas Schmittner, lead author of the new research, which was published in Climate of the Past.
The second natural process is the biological pump
, in which dead organisms and algae carry carbon from the ocean's surface into deeper waters.
Researchers hypothesize that the phytoplankton would drive a "biological pump
" that would draw organic material--and the C[O.sub.2] in the surface waters--into deeper waters, where it could be stored.
