betulinic acidA natural pentacyclic triterpene extracted from bark of various plants—e.g., Betula pubescens, Lycopus lucidus, Syzigium claviflorum, Ziziphus mauritiana, Prunella vulgaris, and others—which is anti-retroviral (inhibits steps of HIV assembly and virion budding), anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative (inhibits telomerase and induces apoptosis).
