The total volume of fossil fuels burnt per year worldwide, about nine BTOE, is the result of geochemical transformations of biomass containing 4.4 x [10.sup.19] g carbon (C), more than 400 times the net primary production of the Earth today.
In the New Policies Scenario (NPS), the middle of the road case, total energy requirement is expected to increase from 13.76 billion tons of oil equivalent (btoe) in 2016 to 17.584-btoe in 2040, a growth of 28 per cent.
Given the above assumptions, energy demand that quadrupled since 1960 is seen by the study to increase by 42 per cent between 2007 and 2030 or from 11.1 billion tonnes of oil equivalent (BTOE) to 15.8 BTOE.
