BAX

BAX
A gene located on chromosome 19q13.3-q13.4, which encodes Bax, which belongs to the BCL2 family of proteins with which it forms a heterodimer, together acting as anti- or pro-apoptosis regulators, depending on whether Bax or Bcl-2 is greater. BAX expression is regulated by p53, the tumour suppressor, and is involved in p53-mediated apoptosis.

Bax
A 21-kD protein encoded by BAX, located on chromosome 19q13.3-q13.4, which has significant homology with Bcl-2, the apoptosis repressor, with which it forms a heterodimer. Overexpression of Bax compared to Bcl-2 signifies apoptosis.

Semi-quantitative standards were adopted for Bax and Bcl-2 IHC as follows: no negative (−) expression; weak positive (+) expression in several cells, where positive cells accounted for 0-25% of the whole field of view, staining was light; positive (++), where positive cells accounted for 25-50% of the whole field of view, staining was medium; and strong positive (+++), where positive cells accounted for more than 50% of the whole field of view, staining was deep.

Some studies show that the loss of BAX is responsible for nearly half of the accelerated tumor growth in brain tumors that are related to loss of P53 function.

In most cells, Bax is is kept in an inactive fonn, waiting for a long chain of events to rouse it into action if the cell becomes damaged enough to kill itself.

The study, which was carried out by scientists from five different research agencies, brought together under a Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities programme known as the Marine Biodiversity Hub, compiled existing biological survey datasets, mapped 1,868 square kilometres of seabed with multi-beam sonar, recorded 171 kilometres of underwater video, and collected nearly 1,000 samples of seabed sediments and marine life, according to the hub's director, Professor Nic Bax of the University of Tasmania.
