Avery, Oswald T. (1877–1955) American physician, who with Colin MacLeod and Maclyn McCarty in 1944, demonstrated that the ‘transforming principle’ suggested by GRIFFITH to explain bacterial transformation was DNA. Thus DNA alone could cause a heritable change in bacteria, strongly suggesting that DNA (rather than protein) is the basic genetic material of cells.
