LC3 protein, which is a biochemical marker for autophagic cells (Tanida 2011), was used to obtain independent evidence supporting the conclusion that WK triggers autophagocytosis. WK-treated cells demonstrated an intense, punctuate fluorescence pattern as positive control HCQ.
Examination of fibroids by electron microscopy offers evidence that both injury and autophagocytosis are occurring.
There also exist data suggesting that the abnormality in axonal transport might stimulate the formation of, or enhance the accumulation of, A[beta] [134, 137], through autophagocytosis of mitochondria without normal lysosomal degradation [137].
