The Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM) gene is one candidate for such a susceptibility gene.
Notably, approximately 20% of these candidate genes have already been implicated in Mendelian diseases, including disease genes for rare forms of cancer susceptibility, such as the breast cancer susceptibility loci BRCA1 and BRCA2, neurofibromin 1 (NF1), retinoblastoma locus RB1, Wilms tumor locus WT1, and ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM).
Funded by Leukaemia Research, the study will look at how identifying a particular gene - ataxia telangiectasia mutated - can enable doctors to offer tailored treatments to patients.
According to the researchers, the problem mainly results from mutations in the ATM (ataxia telangiectasia mutated) gene, which encodes an enzyme that controls cells' response to and repair of DNA damage.
Now the team of scientists have found for the first time that damage to another gene - dubbed ATM (ataxia telangiectasia mutated) - can have a knock-on effect on the p53 gene.
