Conclusion At 1 month, 7% of rt-PA patients and 10% of placebo patients had died, which translates as a 26% reduction in mortality with rt-PA; at 6 months, mortality was 10% with rt-PA and 13% with placebo, a 21% decrease in mortality; tPA reduced mortality, but not morbidity (rates of recurrent infarction, angina, or heart failure), if given within 5 hours of onset of symptoms; alteplase reduced mortality by 33% over the placebo controls in those age 66 to 75, and by 14% in those under age 65.
