arithmetical mean

The total of all values divided by the number of observations. If the distribution of the values is skewed, the arithmetical mean is a misleading figure. In such a case the GEOMETRIC MEAN is appropriate.

The points limit will be central to the discussions, having been due to rise from 38.85 to 39.90 - still below the arithmetical mean and therefore a further reduction in strengh - but the direction in which it will go now is unclear.
Instead of using the arithmetical mean, we chose the median for the analyses, since there is empirical evidence showing that this is the best option for contaminated distributions (see Ratcliff, 1993; Perea & Algarabel, 1999; see also Acha & Perea, in press, for a study with beginning readers).
The deviation that exists between British and Irish ratings was covered in detail by colleague Andrew Scutts in an article in this paper in March 2006, but stems from the fact that in September 2003 the BHA adjusted its ratings by a graduated amount to account for slippage (change in the arithmetical mean of the horse population), as they had done so at a similar stage of each season since 2000.
We prepared two sets of steel plates, of which surface roughness (arithmetical mean surface roughness) were less than 3.1 um (plate 1) and 25 um (plate 2).
