Fused trans-axial images demonstrated pathological uptakes located in the pituitary gland ([SUV.sub.max]: 9.8) (Figure 1b), soft tissues in the
anterior mediastinum ([SUV.sub.max]: 10.7) (Figure 1c), and the left acetabular region ([SUV.sub.max]: 10.6) (Figure 1d).
Benign mature teratoma in
anterior mediastinum. J Clin Med Res 2015;7:726-8.
Thymus is an important organ housed in the
anterior mediastinum and thymoma is the most common tumour of the thymus with an incidence of 0.15 per 100, 000 person years.
CT study of the thorax revealed a nodule, 2x3 cm in diameter, located on the
anterior mediastinum superior to the aortic arch (Figure 1, 2).
In this case, a 4-year-old girl presented with a harsh systolic murmur because of extrinsic compression of the pulmonary artery by a teratoma in the
anterior mediastinum [2].
The patient was brought to 30 degrees semi-supine position if the lesion was located in the
anterior mediastinum. Due to our experience in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) thymectomy, in patients for which we prefer the right-sided approach in robotic excision of anterior mediastinal lesions, the patients were supported with a roll under the right shoulder and then, the right arm was brought below the level of rib cage [Figure 1].
The patient underwent exploration of the lower neck and upper
anterior mediastinum by a cervical approach.
Anterior mediastinal tumors (located in the
anterior mediastinum) cause severe and life-threatening cardiorespiratory complications and even death.
Additionally, there was significant clot burden in the
anterior mediastinum encasing the ascending aorta and the pulmonary artery.
Subsequent CT scan of her chest showed the mass extending into the
anterior mediastinum with scattered calcifications within the mass (Figure 1).

anterior mediastinum in oncology: Current clinical applications in qualitative and quantitative assessment," Critical Review in Oncology/Hematology, vol.
The most common mediastinal cysts include bronchogenic cysts, enteric duplication cysts, pericardial cysts, and thymic cysts, though most of these cysts appear in the middle mediastinum with the exception of thymic cysts in the
anterior mediastinum. Bronchogenic cysts can be ciliated and may stain positive cytokeratin (CK7) positive but rarely stain PAX8, WT-1, and ER positive [5].
