John Zimmerman at Sporty's told me smartphone anemometers are niche products, but are gaining traction as they get better.
Performance Comparison Tests of Commonly Used Anemometers and Flowmeters
Two propeller-vane anemometers were installed on the windward side of the straightaway to measure the wind speed and direction, at positions prescribed by the EPA.
In most cases, they find that the balancer is attempting to determine the air quantities and has a hot wire anemometer of some sort.
While the measurement masts are installed on site it should be made sure that wind vanes are not installed at the same height of anemometers as this might disturb the stream of air available to the anemometers.
At each location, hold the anemometer at arms-length.
The commonly used methods at present and the potential techniques for the near future for indoor airflow measurements include rotating vane anemometers, thermal anemometers, ultrasonic anemometers, Laser-Doppler velocimetry, visualization techniques, particle image velocimetry, particle tracking velocimetry, and molecular tagging velocimetry.
We believe that permission to site more anemometers in the area should not be granted until the outcome of the inquiry has been determined.
The new thermal anemometers have intuitive operation and a large display for viewing of measurements.
The introduction of wind anemometers on Yuill Homes' building developments is enabling site managers to accurately assess the temperature, wind chill factor and wind speed each day - measurements that building staff depend on to make decisions about the use of cranes, building at heights and other construction processes.
If granted, the anemometers would remain in place for a year, and used to decide whether or not the area provides a suitable site for a minimum of 20 wind turbines, sufficient to satisfy Gwynedd's contribution to the government's renewable energy programme.
