alternative splicing

process in which RNA PRIMARY TRANSCRIPTS (containing INTRONS as well as EXONS) of some genes give rise to related, but different, mature mRNAs, by differences in RNA SPLICING so that different combinations of exons assemble. This increases the coding capacity of the GENOME and results in the synthesis of a range of related PROTEINS, called isoforms. Alternative splicing is also called DIFFERENTIAL SPLICING.
