Mark was one half of well known rave duo Altern 8 - famed for their outrageous outfits, massive live performances and mad publicity stunts - including playing on top of an articulated lorry in a car park.
The eventual breakthrough in the late 1960s with the autobiographical trilogy Jenseits von Schuld und Suhne (1966), Uber das Altern (1968), and Unmeisterliche Wanderjahre (1971) comes across as the turning-point in his life, but in a highly ambivalent sense.
