aleurone layera layer of cells just below the TESTA of seeds such as barley. Aleurone releases large quantities of hydrolytic enzymes (AMYLASES, PROTEASES and NUCLEASES) for digestion of the ENDOSPERM. Thus food material is made available in soluble form for embryo growth. Enzyme release is brought on by the plant hormone GIBBERELLIN, which is released by the embryo when the seed is soaked in water prior to germination.
