algolagnia

(1) Sexuoeroticism that is contingent on receiving physical pain, in particular in an erogenous zone. Algolagnia is currently attributed to the misinterpretation of the brain of painful stimuli as pleasurable, which is linked in some cases to a mutation in SCN9A, which encodes a sodium ion channel.
(2) Sado-masochistic sexual drive, which is divided into:
• Active algolagnia, preferably termed sexual sadism, or sadism; and
• Passive algolagnia, preferably termed sexual masochism, or masochism.
