ACES
CardiologyAzithromycin Coronary Events Study. A trial that asked whether Chlamydia pneumoniae infection is causally associated with cardiovascular disease and, if so, whether azithromycin treatment would reduce the risk of subsequent coronary events.
Logistics
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled test; adults with stable coronary heart disease. ACES was sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute; participants randomised to treatment received 600 mg of azithromycin orally once/week X 1 year, then were followed for a mean of 4 years.
Primary endpoint
Composite—coronary heart disease death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, hospitalisation for unstable angina, coronary revascularisation.
Conclusions
No link between cardiovascular disease and Chlamydia pneumoniae; azithromycin treatment doesn’t affect morbidity or mortality.
Medspeak Abbreviation for:
adverse cardiac event
adverse clinical event
Microbiology
Avelox Clinical Experience Study.
A post-marketing study which assessed the safety and efficacy of Avelox (moxifloxacin), a fluoroquinolone.
Conclusion
Avelox is useful for managing acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (ABECB), acute bacterial sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.
Nutrition
An acronym for the major dietary antioxidants—vitamin A (and beta carotene), vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium. Increased consumption of the ACES group is thought to decrease the effects of ageing and stimulate the immune system.
