ACLYA gene on chromosome 17q21.2 that encodes ATP citrate lyase, the main enzyme responsible for synthesising cytosolic acetyl-CoA, which catalyses the formation of acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate from citrate and CoA with hydrolysis of ATP to ADP and phosphate. Acetyl-CoA serves several important biosynthetic pathways, including lipogenesis and
cholesterogenesis; in nervous tissue, it is involved in the biosynthesis of acetylcholine.
