AGTA gene on chromosome 1q42-q43 that encodes angiotensinogen precursor, which is expressed in the liver. Angiotensinogen precursor is cleaved by the enzyme renin in response to decreased blood pressure into angiotensin I, which in turn is cleaved by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to generate the physiologically active angiotensin II, the enzyme responsible for maintaining blood pressure.
AGT is intimately linked to the pathogenesis of essential hypertension and preeclampsia. AGT mutations are associated with essential hypertension and cause renal tubular dysgenesis, a severe disorder of renal tubular development; mutations have also been linked to non-familial structural atrial fibrillation and inflammatory bowel disease.
