ALDH2

A gene on chromosome 12q24.2, which encodes a protein belonging to the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) family of proteins, and is the second enzyme of the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. The two major liver isoforms of ALDH, cytosolic and mitochondrial, can be distinguished by their electrophoretic mobilities. Most Caucasians have both; 50% of Asians have only the cytosolic isozym, making them more susceptible to acute alcohol intoxication.
