ABCC11

A gene on chromosome 16q12.1 that encodes a protein of the MRP subfamily of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which transport various molecules across extra- and intracellular membranes, many of which are involved in multidrug resistance. ABCC11 is involved in bile acids, conjugated steroids and cyclic nucleotide transport and extrusion from the cell.

The researchers found that about two per cent (117 out of 6,495) of mothers carry a rare version of a particular gene (ABCC11), which means that they don't produce any under-arm odour.
This study looked for the first time at deodorant usage in relation to ABCC11 genotype and also in comparison with other factors such as age, background and general household hygiene.
To reach the conclusion, Ishikawa and colleagues monitored the activities of a protein created by a gene associated with breast cancer, called "ABCC11." By studying this gene and its complex cellular and molecular interactions in the body, the researchers discovered a distinct link between the gene and excessively smelly armpits and wet, sticky earwax.
