DIO1 A gene on chromosome 1p33-p32 that encodes a thiol-requiring propylthiouracil-sensitive oxidoreductase. DIO1 activates thyroid hormone by converting the prohormone thyroxine (T4) by outer-ring deiodination to bioactive 3,3’,5-triiodothyronine (T3). It also degrades T3 and T4 by inner-ring deiodination.
