an estrogenic substance used to fatten livestock. Consumption of beef from zeranol-treated cattle has been associated with precocious puberty in some boys and girls.

zeranol
a synthetic zearalenone (6′-reduced zearalenone) marketed as Ralgro used as a growth promotant in cattle. Called also zearalanol.

The panel found that the EU failed to show that there was insufficient scientific evidence to justify continuation of the provisional ban on five other hormones -- testosterone, progesterone, trenbolone acetate, zeranol, and melengestrol acetate--and that the EU should therefore have carried out risk assessments on the hormones.
Of these, testosterone and progesterone are produced naturally by the animals and zeranol and trenbolone acetate are synthetically made.
