Generally, I prefer 'soft' hardwoods, and I avoid trees with soft wood and slick bark like red maples and yellow poplars.
Yellow poplars can grow as much as 50 feet in the span of 11 years, and, while they thrive in the southern Appalachians, they will also continue to grow in polluted areas and times of drought.
