[zī′lōmetaz′əlēn]
an alpha-adrenergic vasoconstrictor.
indications It is prescribed as an intranasal medication for the treatment of congestion due to colds, hay fever, sinusitis, and other upper respiratory allergies.
contraindications Glaucoma or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to sympathomimetic medications prohibits its use. It is used with caution in patients having cardiovascular disease.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are irritation to the mucosa, rebound nasal congestion, and effects associated with systemic absorption, including sedation and alterations in cardiovascular function.
