Etymology: Gk, xeros, dry, keras, horn, itis, inflammation
an inflammation of the cornea resulting from dryness of the conjunctiva. Underlying causes may be malnutrition, a deficiency of vitamin A, or autoimmune diseases.

Softening, desiccation, and ulceration of cornea resulting from dryness of the conjunctiva.
