xenograft /xeno·graft/ (zen´o-graft) a graft of tissue transplanted between animals of different species; it may be concordant, occurring between closely related species, in which the recipient lacks natural antibodies specific for the transplanted tissue, or discordant, occurring between members of distantly related species, in which the recipient has natural antibodies specific for the transplanted tissue.
Xenograft Tissue that is transplanted from one species to another (e.g., pigs to humans). Mentioned in: Skin Grafting xenograft [zen′əgraft′] Etymology: Gk, xenos + graphion, stylus tissue from another species used as a temporary graft in certain cases, as in treating a severely burned patient when sufficient tissue from the patient or from a tissue bank is not available. It is quickly rejected but provides a cover for the burn for the first few days, reducing fluid loss from the open wound. Also called heterograft. Compare allograft, autograft, isograft.
