Uplands were dominated by native Tamaulipan thorn scrub composed of honey mesquite, blackbrush acacia (Acacia rigidula), whitebrush (Aloysia gratissima), purple sage (Leucophyllum frutescens), creosotebush (Larrea tridentata), guajillo (Acacia berlandien), lotebush (Ziziphus obtusifolia), and Texas prickly pear (Opuntia engelmannii).
The herbaceous-dominated interspace between clusters of shrubs can produce low-intensity fires, while stands of volatile shrubs such as whitebrush (Aloysia gratissima) can produce high-intensity burns.
Subdominant woody species include twisted acacia (Acacia schaffneri), blackbrush (Acacia rigidula), brasil (Condalia hookeri), hog-plum (Colubrina texana) and whitebrush (Aloysia gratissima).
