Paclitaxel, the first organic compound with a taxane ring that has been demonstrated to possess antineoplastic activity, was isolated in 1967 from the bark of the Western yew, Taxus brevifolia.
Western yew -- Taxus brevifolia -- is also called Pacific yew and mountain mahogany.
The tree is also called pacific or western yew and grows on the Pacific Coast and in southwestern Canada.
