wax (waks) a low-melting, high-molecular-weight, organic mixture or compound, similar to fats and oils but lacking glycerides; it may be deposited by insects, obtained from plants, or prepared synthetically.
dental wax  a mixture of two or more waxes with other additives, used in dentistry for casts, construction of nonmetallic denture bases, registering of jaw relations, and laboratory work.
ear wax  cerumen.
white wax  bleached beeswax; bleached, purified wax from the honeycomb of the bee, Apis mellifera; used as a pharmaceutical stiffening agent.
yellow wax  beeswax; purified wax from the honeycomb of the bee, Apis mellifera; used as a pharmaceutical stiffening agent.

wax (wks)
n.
1. Any of various natural, oily or greasy heat-sensitive substances, consisting of hydrocarbons or esters of fatty acids that are insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents.
2. Cerumen.
3. A solid plastic or pliable liquid substance, such as paraffin, originating from petroleum and found in rock layers and often used in medicinal preparations.

n one of several esters of fatty acids with higher alcohols, usually monohydric alcohols. Dental waxes are combinations of various types of waxes compounded to provide the desired physical properties.

n a plastic mixture that may contain antiseptic and hemostatic drugs, designed for temporary application to freshly cut bone to prevent hemorrhage and infection.

n a hard, high-melting wax used for control of the melting range of dental waxes.
wax, casting,
n a composition containing various waxes with controlled properties of thermal expansion and contraction; used in making patterns to determine the shape of metal castings.
wax elimination,
n the procedure of removing the wax from a wax pattern invested in a mold preparatory to the introduction of another material into the resulting cavity. This may be done by dry heat alone or by irrigation with boiling water followed by use of dry heat. Also called
wax burnout.
wax expansion,
n the enlargement of wax patterns to compensate for the shrinkage of gold during the casting process.
wax, fluid,
n a series of waxes, each having different physical properties, used for making a correctable impression of the foundation structures that are to support a denture base. The term indicates that the wax is applied in fluid form as required.
