template [tem′plit] Etymology: L, templum, section the strand of DNA that acts as a model for the synthesis of messenger RNA. The messenger RNA contains a complementary sequence of nucleotides and travels to the ribosomes, which are located in the cytoplasm, for the synthesis of proteins. template [tem´plāt] a pattern or mold. In dentistry, a curved or flat plate used as an aid in setting teeth for a denture. In theoretical immunology, an antigen that determines the configuration of combining (antigen-binding) sites of antibody molecules. In genetics, a strand of DNA which specifies the synthesis of a complementary strand of RNA (messenger RNA, ribosomal RNA, or transfer RNA); mRNA in turn serves as a template for the synthesis of nucleic acids or proteins.
