fremitus

 [frem´ĭ-tus]
a vibration perceptible on palpation or auscultation; see also thrill.
tactile fremitus a type of vocal fremitus found over an area of secretions.
tussive fremitus one felt on the chest while the patient coughs.
vocal fremitus (VF) transmission of the spoken voice to the chest wall, detectable by auscultation or palpation; it is increased with lung consolidation and decreased with pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and airway obstruction.

the vibration in the chest wall, felt on palpation, produced by the spoken voice.

vocal fremitus (VF)

the vibration of the chest wall as a person speaks or sings that allows the person's voice to be heard by auscultation of the chest with a stethoscope. Vocal fremitus is decreased in emphysema, pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, and bronchial obstruction and is increased in consolidation, as in pneumonia. Compare tactile fremitus.
