These sharks are viviparous which is giving birth to live offspring.
Also on the top 10 list is a fossilized specimen - Materpiscis attenboroughi - the oldent known vertebrate to be viviparous (live bearing).
The distinction between viviparous and ovoviviparous is a consideration in interpreting mass loss and energy data in our study because it hinges on whether the em- bryos developing inside the mothers' bodies are supplied with maternal nutrients (viviparous), or rely entirely on their yolk sacs (ovoviviparous).
