a viral infection of the vestibular nerve presenting with vertigo. It usually spares the cochlear nerve and thus usually is associated with neither decreased hearing nor tinnitus.

There are several causes, including labyrinthitis (often after a cold), viral vestibular neuritis and Meniere's disease, but this sounds more like positional vertigo, which happens with quick changes in head position.
