Obsessive repetition of meaningless words and phrases, especially as a symptom of mental illness.

stereotypy in speech; stereotyped and meaningless repetition of words and phrases, as seen in some cases of schizophrenia; see also perseveration and logorrhea. Called also cataphasia.

We must develop a scientific orientation in order to avoid both primitive faith in incantation and sophisticated scholastic verbigeration, but we are often hindered by the assumption that if people argue and talk long enough, the truth will ultimately emerge.
Whether our excessive susceptibility to words unrooted in facts takes the form of a primitive faith in incantation or the more sophisticated form of scholastic verbigeration, the importance of this susceptibility lies in the fact that it is another barrier to human agreement.
