n procedure performed surgically to direct cerebrospinal fluid into the general circulation. Typically performed in newborns, this approach is performed as an alternative to aurioculoventriculostomy to treat an obstructive form of the condition known as hydrocephalus. See also hydrocephalus.

n a surgical procedure for directing cerebrospinal fluid into the general circulation; performed in the treatment of hydrocephalus, usually in the newborn.
