Dilation of a blood vessel, as by the action of a nerve or drug. Also called phlebarteriectasia.

Vasodilation
The increase in the internal diameter of a blood vessel that results from relaxation of smooth muscle within the wall of the vessel thus causing an increase in blood flow.

Etymology: L, vas + dilatare
an increase in the diameter of a blood vessel. It is caused by a relaxation of the smooth muscles in the vessel wall. Also called vasodilatation. Compare vasoconstriction.
