vasoactive intestinal polypeptide

polypeptide /poly·pep·tide/ (-pep´tīd) a peptide containing more than two amino acids linked by peptide bonds.
vasoactive intestinal polypeptide  a hormone that has vasoactive properties, stimulates intestinal secretion of water and electrolytes, inhibits gastric secretion, promotes glycogenolysis, causes hyperglycemia, and stimulates production of pancreatic juice.
vasoactive intestinal polypeptide

A polypeptide hormone usually secreted by non-beta islet cell tumors of the pancreas, producing copious watery diarrhea and fecal electrolyte loss, resulting in hypokalemia.
vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP),
a glucagon-secretin hormone found in the pancreas, intestine, and central nervous system. The hormone stimulates insulin and glucagon release. Gastric secretion, gastric motility, and peripheral vasodilation, as well as hyperglycemia by hepatic glycogenolysis, are inhibited. See also VIPoma.
