At the river's end, wetland birds, along with a small, rare, shallows-dwelling porpoise called a vaquita, are threatened by all the upstream maneuvering.
Seventy-three percent of vaquita marinas -- Spanish for "little sea cow" -- have disappeared in the last 10 years, caught in fishing drag nets.
Smaller coastal and fresh water species, including the vaquita porpoise, finless porpoise, South American river dolphin and Irrawaddy dolphin, are increasingly at risk of extinction.
