sprue (sproo)
1. a chronic form of malabsorption syndrome, occurring in both tropical and nontropical forms.
2. in dentistry, the hole through which metal or other material is poured or forced into a mold.

celiac sprue  see under disease.
collagenous sprue  an often fatal condition resembling celiac sprue but unresponsive to withdrawal of dietary gluten, characterized by extensive deposition of collagen in the lamina propria of the colon.
nontropical sprue  celiac disease.
refractory sprue 
1. malabsorption and flat jejunal mucosa unresponsive to withdrawal of dietary gluten.
2. celiac disease in which initial responsiveness to gluten withdrawal deteriorates with time.
tropical sprue  a malabsorption syndrome occurring in the tropics and subtropics, marked by stomatitis, diarrhea, and anemia.

sprue (spr)
n.
1. A chronic disease that is characterized by diarrhea, steatorrhea, emaciation, and anemia, caused by defective absorption of nutrients from the intestinal tract. Also called psilosis.
2. Wax or metal used to form the pathway for forcing molten metal into a mold in the making of a dental casting.

Sprue
A disorder of impaired absorption of nutrients from the diet by the small intestine (malabsorption), resulting in malnutrition. Two forms of sprue exist: tropical sprue, which occurs mainly in tropical regions; and celiac sprue, which occurs more widely and is due to sensitivity to the wheat protein gluten.

sprue
a chronic form of malabsorption syndrome in humans occurring in two forms, tropical, which is associated with ingestion of gluten-containing foods (called also celiac disease), and nontropical. Malabsorption syndromes in dogs are sometimes compared with, but are not identical with, sprue.
