Impact echo (IE), or ultrasonic pulse echo, utilizes impact-generated stress waves to assess subsurface flaws and material thickness.
Each UT continuously sends 5-MHz diagnostic ultrasonic pulses to the screw at a rate ranging from 600 to 700 pulses per screw revolution and keeps capturing the echoes reflected by the rotating screw.
[FIGURE 1 OMITTED] A portion of the ultrasonic pulse travels deeper into the PEM, where it is reflected from deeper material interfaces; these reflections are used to image internal features.
