blepharitis /bleph·a·ri·tis/ (blef″ah-ri´tis) inflammation of the eyelids.
blepharitis angula´ris inflammation involving the angles of the eyelids. blepharitis cilia´ris , marginal blepharitis a chronic inflammation of the hair follicles and sebaceous gland openings of the margins of the eyelids. nonulcerative blepharitis , seborrheic blepharitis blepharitis with seborrhea of the scalp, brows, and skin behind the ears, marked by greasy scaling, hyperemia, and thickening. ulcerative blepharitis that marked by small ulcerated areas along the eyelid margin, multiple suppurative lesions, and loss of lashes.
ulcerative blepharitis [ul′sərā′tiv, ul′sərətiv′] Etymology: L, ulcus + atus, relating to; Gk, blepharon, eyelid, itis, inflammation a form of blepharitis in which a staphylococcal infection of the follicles of the eyelashes and glands of the eyelids results in sticky crusts forming on the lid margins. If the crusts are pulled off, the skin beneath bleeds. Tiny pustules develop in the follicles of the eyelashes and break down to form shallow ulcers. Other symptoms include burning, itching, swelling, and redness of the eyelids; a loss of eyelashes; irritation of the conjunctiva with tearing; photophobia; and gluing together of the eyelids during sleep by the dried secretions. Compare nonulcerative blepharitis. blepharitis [blef″ah-ri´tis] inflammation of the glands and lash follicles along the margin of the eyelids; symptoms include itching, burning, photophobia, mucous discharge, crusted eyelids, and loss of eyelashes. Warm saline compresses may be used to soften secretions, and the eyelids are cleansed thoroughly. Exudate and scales should be removed by stroking downward and sideways. Antibiotic salve or eyedrops are administered as prescribed; in some cases systemic antibiotic therapy is indicated. angular blepharitis inflammation involving the outer angle of the eyelids. nonulcerative blepharitis (squamous blepharitis) that in which the edge of the eyelid is covered with small white or gray scales. ulcerative blepharitis that marked by small ulcerated areas along the eyelid margin, multiple suppurative lesions, and loss of lashes.
