A small tube inserted through the tympanic membrane after myringotomy to aerate the middle ear; often used in the treatment of secretory otitis media.

Ear tube. A small tube made of metal or plastic that is inserted during myringotomy to ventilate the middle ear.

Otorhinolaryngology A small metal or Teflon tube or grommet inserted in the tympanic membrane of Pts–often young children with recurring, antibiotic-refractory otitis media; while the ventilating tube is in place, there is a significant ↓ in episodes of otitis media; once removed, the treated ear has worse auditory discrimination, more otitis, tympanosclerosis, retraction and atrophy
